Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing an alternative wedding in Stirling, Scotland, and honestly, this is exactly why I love getting to photograph weddings that are unapologetically the couple.
Forget the idea that every bride has to wear white. Forget the rulebook, the expectations and the pressure to do things the way everyone else does them.
This wedding had a black wedding dress, ghostly accessories scattered throughout the details and a Star Wars cosplay reading that brought a wonderfully unexpected twist to the ceremony.
And you know what? It was brilliant.
A black wedding dress and a wedding with personality
There is something special about photographing a wedding where the couple have clearly embraced their own style rather than trying to fit into somebody else’s idea of what a wedding should look like.
A black wedding dress makes a statement all on its own. Add ghost-inspired accessories and alternative styling, and suddenly you have a wedding aesthetic that feels completely different from the traditional white dress, pastel flowers and classic bridal details.
I love seeing couples bring their personalities into their wedding day. Whether that’s through gothic styling, alternative fashion, unusual accessories, fandom-inspired details or something entirely their own, these are the choices that make every wedding unique.
And from a photography perspective? Those details are an absolute dream to capture.
Every accessory tells a little part of the story. Every styling choice reflects the people getting married. Together, they create a collection of wedding photographs that could never belong to anyone else.
Ghostly wedding details and alternative styling
The ghost accessories dotted throughout this Stirling wedding added another layer of personality to the day.
Alternative weddings are often all about the little things. It’s not necessarily about creating the biggest or most elaborate spectacle; it’s about choosing details that mean something to you and bringing them together in a way that feels authentic.
For some couples, that might mean a dark, gothic wedding theme. For others, it could be spooky décor, alternative bouquets, dramatic outfits or quirky little references that their closest friends and family will recognise.
There are no rules about what your wedding has to look like.
As a wedding photographer in Scotland, I love documenting these individual touches because, years from now, they’re part of what will make looking back at your photographs so special. You’ll remember why you chose that accessory, the thought behind a particular detail and all the little things that made the day yours.
A Star Wars cosplay wedding reading? Absolutely!
And then came the Star Wars cosplay reading.
Because why shouldn’t your wedding ceremony include something you love?
Your wedding doesn’t need to look like every other wedding you’ve ever attended. It can be romantic, funny, quirky, alternative, emotional, wonderfully geeky or a combination of all those things.
If Star Wars is part of your world, why wouldn’t you incorporate it into your wedding? If you love cosplay, gaming, fantasy, horror, alternative music or anything else that makes you who you are, your wedding is the perfect opportunity to celebrate that.
These are the moments that make a wedding memorable. Not because they’re following a trend, but because they’re personal.
And that’s what I want your wedding photography to preserve: the atmosphere, the personality, the details and the moments that make your day unmistakably yours.
