Meet Robyn Allan: A Scottish Boudoir Photographer Based in Perth
f you’ve been searching for a boudoir photographer in Scotland, you may have come across my name — I’m Robyn Allan, the photographer behind Robyn Allan Photography, based in Perth, Scotland.
I specialise in boudoir photography for women, and if I’m completely honest, I probably love the talking, laughing and getting to know my clients just as much as I love taking their photographs.
Because for me, boudoir photography has never simply been about taking beautiful photographs.
It’s about people.
It’s about trust.
It’s about nerves.
It’s about connection.
And, most importantly, it’s about that moment when a woman sees herself in a completely different way.
So, who is Robyn Allan?
I’ve been involved in photography since 2010, but photography wasn’t actually where my career began.
Before becoming a full-time photographer, I worked in the dental industry for a world-class cosmetic dentist and educator.
And surprisingly, that career taught me an enormous amount about what I do today.
I worked with patients who were often extremely nervous about dental treatment, including people who were genuinely phobic.
Our work specialised in smile makeovers for nervous and phobic patients, with a huge emphasis on education, communication and customer service.
And somewhere along the way, I realised that photography had become an important part of my role too.
I had to learn photography as part of that career, and that’s where my journey with a camera really began.
Looking back now, it’s funny how much of that experience has followed me into my life as a photographer.
From photographing smiles to photographing women
In 2020, I took a huge leap and became self-employed.
I swapped teeth for ladies in underwear!
And while the two careers might sound completely unrelated, there are actually some surprisingly strong similarities.
The cameras changed.
The setting changed.
The subject definitely changed!
But the people skills didn’t.
The women who come to me for a boudoir photoshoot can be incredibly nervous.
Some have never had professional photographs taken before.
Some don’t consider themselves photogenic.
Some don’t particularly like being photographed.
Some have spent years avoiding photographs of themselves.
And some are doing something that feels absolutely enormous to them.
That feeling is something I understand.
I know how important it is to feel that you are in safe hands.
I know how important it is to explain things properly.
I know that humour can make an uncomfortable situation feel much easier.
And I know that when someone trusts you enough to step outside their comfort zone, the experience needs to be about much more than simply getting a good photograph.
Why I specialise in women
I absolutely love photographing women.
I love getting to know my clients.
I love a good yap.
And yes, there is usually a LOT of chatting!
But that connection is actually a huge part of why I love boudoir photography in Scotland so much.
I want my clients to feel like they can be themselves around me.
You don’t have to arrive at my studio being effortlessly confident.
You don’t have to know how to pose.
You don’t have to know what to do with your hands.
And you certainly don’t need to look like a model.
That’s my job.
My job is to guide you, help you relax, make you laugh, show you how to pose and create an environment where you can forget about the camera for a while.
Boudoir photography isn’t just about the photographs
Of course, I want you to love your photographs.
That’s a given.
But I also want you to love the experience of having them taken.
I’ve seen women arrive nervous and unsure about what they’ve signed themselves up for.
Then, somewhere during the shoot, something changes.
They relax.
They laugh.
They start enjoying themselves.
They stop worrying about whether they’re doing it “right”.
And eventually they look at a photograph of themselves and say:
“Is that actually me?”
That reaction never gets old.
Because that’s what I love about boudoir.
Sometimes you don’t need somebody to convince you that you’re beautiful.
Sometimes you just need somebody to show you what they can see.
You don’t need to be confident to book a boudoir photoshoot
One of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir photography is that you need to be confident before you book.
You don’t.
In fact, some of my favourite shoots have been with women who arrived saying:
“I’m so nervous.”
“I hate having my photograph taken.”
“I don’t know if I can do this.”
“I don’t feel sexy.”
That’s okay.
You don’t need to arrive feeling like the most confident woman in Scotland.
You simply need to be willing to give yourself the opportunity to see yourself differently.
I’ll take care of the posing.
I’ll guide you through what to do.
We’ll talk.
We’ll laugh.
And we’ll take it at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Trust is a huge part of what I do
Boudoir photography is personal.
You’re trusting me with photographs of yourself that you may never have allowed anybody else to take.
That’s something I never take for granted.
My background in the dental industry taught me that when someone is nervous, telling them to “just relax” doesn’t magically make them relax.
Trust has to be earned.
Communication matters.
Listening matters.
Making someone feel heard matters.
And sometimes, having a good sense of humour helps enormously!
I want you to feel that you can tell me if something doesn’t feel right.
You should never feel pressured into a pose, an outfit or anything else you’re uncomfortable with.
Your boudoir experience should belong to you.
Privacy matters too
I know that not every woman wants her boudoir photographs shared online.
And that’s completely understandable.
For some women, their photographs are something incredibly personal that they want to keep entirely to themselves.
That’s why privacy and consent are such an important part of my approach to boudoir photography in Scotland.
Before booking a photographer, always ask how your images will be used, whether photographs are shared online and what happens if you don’t want your images published.
You should know exactly what you’re agreeing to.
Why do women book boudoir photography?
The answer is different for everyone.
Some women book because they want to celebrate themselves.
Some want to mark a birthday or milestone.
Some have gone through a huge life change.
Some have become mums and want to reconnect with the woman underneath the “Mum” role.
Some want to do something completely outside their comfort zone.
Some are getting married and want a bridal boudoir shoot.
And some simply think:
“I’ve always wanted to do this.”
You don’t need a special reason.
You don’t need to wait for a milestone.
You don’t need to have a certain body shape.
And you don’t need anybody else’s permission.
Sometimes doing something purely for yourself is reason enough.
A Scottish boudoir photographer who loves a good chat
If you’ve read this far, you’ll probably have worked out that I’m not particularly interested in creating a stiff or formal experience.
I want my shoots to feel relaxed.
Fun.
Personal.
And very much like spending time with another woman who happens to have a camera.
Yes, I’ll be taking your photographs.
Yes, I’ll be giving you posing direction.
Yes, I’ll be looking at lighting and angles and making sure we’re creating gorgeous images.
But there will also be plenty of chatting, laughing and probably a fair amount of nonsense in between.
That’s just me.
And I think that’s important when you’re choosing a Scottish boudoir photographer.
You aren’t just choosing photographs.
You’re choosing the person you’re going to spend that experience with.
Why Perth?
I’m based in Perth, Scotland, and welcome women from Perthshire and throughout Scotland for boudoir photography.
Being based in Perth means I’m perfectly placed for clients travelling from different parts of Scotland, while my work also takes me to locations around Scotland for photography projects and shoots.
My business has grown through the women I’ve photographed, the relationships I’ve built with clients and the recommendations and reviews they’ve kindly given me.
And I’m incredibly proud of that.
From nervous dental patients to nervous boudoir clients
Sometimes I think my two careers make far more sense together than they initially appear to.
In the dental industry, I worked with people who were frightened.
My job was to help them understand what was happening, make them feel safe and support them through something that could feel enormous.
Now, as a boudoir photographer in Scotland, I do something remarkably similar — just with considerably less drilling!
The subject has changed, but the fundamentals haven’t.
Listen. Educate. Communicate. Make people feel comfortable. Build trust. And help them walk away feeling proud of themselves.
That is something I’ve carried with me since 2010.
