It’s For the Love of the Game – Kynoch Boxing
Sometimes you go to an event with absolutely no intention of working.
No camera bag.
No shot list.
No pressure to deliver a gallery.
Just a night out with your son.

That was exactly what I was doing recently when Sam, the owner of Kynoch Boxing, invited Jacob and I along to enjoy an evening at a Kynoch boxing event.
And what an evening it was.
The three-course meal was a solid 10/10, the atmosphere was brilliant and the entertainment was exactly what you’d expect from a boxing event — energetic, loud, exciting and completely captivating.
Then, inevitably, I got up and started taking photographs.
Jacob looked at me and said:
“Just enjoy your night, you don’t need to take pictures.”
And he wasn’t wrong.
I didn’t need to.
But that’s the thing…
I bloody love taking pictures.
And boxing is a sport I absolutely adore photographing.
As Steven would say, I photograph it in an “arty farty” way 😂
And honestly? He’s not wrong.
I love looking beyond simply capturing who won, who lost or who threw the biggest punch.
It’s the shadows.
The movement.
The muscles.
The expressions.
The synchronicity.
The energy.
The contrast between stillness and absolute chaos.
The tiny moments that happen in a fraction of a second.
That’s what makes boxing photography so bloody interesting to me.
I actually said to Jacob:
“It’s for the love of the game.”
And that’s exactly what it was.
There was no client waiting for a gallery. No brief. No expectation. Nobody asking me to capture a certain shot.
I was simply standing there with a camera because I wanted to be.
And I think that’s when you can sometimes create a little bit of magic.
When there are no expectations, you can just create.
You can experiment.
You can look at things differently.
You can chase the light, the shadows and the movement.
You can take the photograph because something about it catches your eye — not because you have to.
That’s something I think is incredibly important as a photographer.
Yes, I photograph weddings.
Yes, I photograph boudoir.
Yes, I photograph fitness, portraits and all sorts of other things.
But sometimes it’s nice to pick up the camera simply because you love photography.
And boxing gives me plenty to love.
The evening was also pretty special for Jacob for another reason.
He got to meet Luke Bibby, someone he is genuinely inspired by and someone we’d actually watched the previous week at his home event.
Watching your kid meet someone they look up to is pretty bloody lovely.
So while I was happily photographing the boxing, Jacob was getting to experience a different kind of memorable evening himself.
