Never Judge a Book by Its Cover

This particular session with Lauren took place over a year ago, but sometimes you look back at an old gallery and realise that the photographs have a meaning far beyond what you originally saw.

So today, I’m sharing Lauren’s session again — not simply because I love these images, but because there is something important I want you to remember when you look at them.

Never judge a book by its cover.

If you looked at Lauren, you probably wouldn’t immediately think victim.

And that’s exactly the point.

Lauren doesn’t fit the stereotype of what we have been conditioned to believe a victim should look like.

She is confident. She is beautiful. She looks strong. She is smiling, posing and completely owning the space in front of my camera.

But Lauren is a victim.

A High Court victim, no less.

I won’t share her story or the details of what she has experienced. That is hers to tell, if and when she ever chooses to tell it.

But I do think there is something we can all take from it.

Because we have absolutely no idea what is going on behind someone’s smile.

We don’t know what someone has experienced before they walked into the room.

We don’t know what they are carrying.

We don’t know what their mental health looks like.

We don’t know what they have had to overcome just to get through that particular day.

And we certainly cannot look at someone and decide what they have or haven’t been through based on their appearance.

There is no particular way a victim looks.

There is no outfit.

No body type.

No personality.

No facial expression.

No stereotypical “victim” appearance.

Someone can look confident while struggling internally.

Someone can laugh while carrying unimaginable pain.

Someone can appear to have everything together while using every ounce of their energy simply to make it through the day.

And sometimes, someone can stand in front of a camera, feel beautiful, feel empowered and create photographs that show a version of themselves that perhaps the world doesn’t always get to see.

That is one of the things I love most about boudoir photography.

It isn’t just about lingerie or beautiful photographs.

It can be about confidence.

It can be about reclaiming yourself.

It can be about feeling strong.

It can be about stepping into a room carrying one version of yourself and leaving feeling like something has shifted.

Lauren’s session was over a year ago, but looking back at these photographs today, I see them differently.

I see a beautiful woman.

I see confidence.

I see strength.

And I also see a reminder that we never really know what someone else is going through.

So, before you judge someone because of how they look, how they dress, how they behave or how they present themselves to the world…

Pause.

You don’t know their story.

Be kind.

You never know what someone is fighting quietly behind the scenes.
