The Most Special Maternity Session | Welcoming Baby Colt

And then there are the ones where you put your camera down afterwards and think, “I can’t believe I got to photograph this.”

This maternity photography session was definitely one of those.

Because this wasn’t just any maternity session.

This was my beautiful best friend Paula, her husband Ryan, their son Nate — and the little boy they had almost stopped believing would ever join their family.

This was Colt.

When the pregnancy test came out…

Paula and Ryan had accepted that a second child wasn’t going to happen for them.

They had their beautiful boy Nate, they were happy as a family of three, and they had come to terms with the idea that perhaps that was how their family was going to stay.

I’ll never forget the day I popped down to Paula’s for a coffee.

As I often do.

Okay… about four times a week. 😂

We were just having a normal coffee when she casually produced a pregnancy test.

I screamed.

Obviously.

I was absolutely over the moon for them.

There are some moments in life that you know you’ll remember forever, and finding out my best friend was going to have another baby is definitely one of mine.

A maternity session for a very special mum

Fast forward, and I found myself photographing Paula’s beautiful maternity session.

Being a maternity photographer in Scotland means I get to photograph so many incredibly special moments for families, but photographing your best friend when you already know the story behind the bump is something completely different.

This wasn’t simply a maternity photoshoot.

It was the celebration of a baby who wasn’t expected.

A baby who was already so incredibly loved.

And the final piece of a family that means so much to me.

Paula, Ryan and Nate have genuinely become an extended part of our family over the years, so being able to capture this chapter before Colt arrived was an absolute privilege.

And then came the birthday surprise…

Paula made the decision not to officially announce her pregnancy online.

Instead, she waited until her birthday to share her beautiful news.

And it turns out she had a very good reason to celebrate.

Because little Colt decided to arrive on his mum’s birthday.

Yes — baby boy and mum now share the same birthday.

But somehow, this family managed to make the coincidence even crazier.

Their eldest son, Nate, shares his birthday with his dad, Ryan.

So they’ve somehow ended up with one son sharing Dad’s birthday and the other son sharing Mum’s.

What are the chances?!

Under a very simplified mathematical assumption, two babies independently sharing their respective parent’s birthday would be roughly 1 in 133,000.

Capturing the last few days as a family of three

One of my favourite things about maternity photography is that you’re not just photographing a pregnancy.

You’re photographing the final chapter before everything changes.

During Paula’s maternity session, she was still Mum to one little boy.

Nate was still her only son.

Ryan was still Dad to one child.

And Colt was still safely tucked away, waiting for his big entrance into the world.

There’s something incredibly emotional about knowing that when you look back at these photographs years from now, you’ll be looking at a family that existed for such a short period of time.

A family of three, just before becoming four.

These are the moments I love capturing.

I’ve watched him change so much already in the short time he’s been in the world.

It’s crazy how quickly those tiny newborn features start changing.

I can’t wait to watch him grow.

I can’t wait to see him and Nate grow up together.

And I can’t wait to watch Paula and Ryan navigate life as a family of four.

These two deserve every bit of happiness that has come their way.

They really do.

Little Colt, your story started long before you arrived.

You were the baby your mum and dad had stopped expecting.

The surprise that made your mum’s best friend scream over a pregnancy test.

The little boy who arrived on his mum’s birthday.

And the final piece of a family that was already full of love.

You are so incredibly lucky to have the family you do.

And we’re incredibly lucky that you’re now part of ours too.
