Reclaiming Space, Voice & Legacy | A Headshot and Family Session
Some photoshoots stay with you long after the gallery is delivered.
Recently, I welcomed an incredible woman into the studio for a headshot session connected to a mission she is leading called Reclaim The Church — a movement centred around restoration, remembrance, and reclaiming space for women’s voices and leadership.
Alongside updated professional headshots, she brought her beautiful family and their gorgeous puppy, which gave the session such a grounding sense of warmth and humanity. There was purpose in the room, but also softness. Laughter. Connection. The kind of moments that remind me photography is never just about photographs.
It’s about people.
About legacy.
About documenting who we are and what matters to us right now.
The Mission Behind The Photos
Part of her work stems from a significant moment in Scottish history.
In 2022, the Church of Scotland formally apologised for its role in the historic persecution of those accused of witchcraft — the vast majority of whom were women.
But as she shared with me during our session, acknowledgement is only the beginning.
Her initiative, Reclaim the Church, asks a deeper question:
What would repair actually look like?
The project aims to reclaim and restore a church building as a space dedicated to women’s leadership, gathering, education, and connection — a place where women’s voices are centred rather than silenced.
Not simply symbolic restoration.
But physical, tangible space.
A place built on community instead of fear.
Listening to her speak about this vision was incredibly moving. There was both strength and calm conviction in the way she described it — and I wanted her portraits to reflect exactly that.
Creating Portraits That Felt Honest
When photographing personal brands or mission-led work, I always want the images to feel like the person behind the purpose.
We created a mixture of professional headshots and more relaxed portraits that captured both authority and approachability. Strong eye contact, natural movement, softer in-between moments — images that felt grounded in who she is rather than overly polished or performative.
And then, of course, there were the family photographs.
These ended up becoming some of my favourite moments from the session.
Watching her with her family — and seeing the support surrounding her behind the scenes — added another layer to the story. Big visions are rarely carried alone, and I loved documenting those quieter interactions just as much as the branding portraits themselves.
And the puppy absolutely stole the show a few times too.
Why These Sessions Matter
I think what struck me most was how deeply personal this work is.
This isn’t simply a campaign.
It’s memory, history, restoration, and future all woven together.
As a photographer, it felt incredibly special to document someone standing so fully inside their purpose while also holding close the people she loves most.
These are the kinds of sessions I never take for granted — where photography becomes part documentation, part storytelling, and part witness to something meaningful unfolding.
To Reclaim The Church and the vision behind it: thank you for trusting me to capture this chapter.
And to every woman building something brave, restorative, and deeply human — I see you.
